What Is a Movable Wall?
A movable wall is a system of panels that divides an interior space into separate rooms and can be re-opened when a larger space is needed — without building a permanent wall. The panels run on an overhead track (or, for some glazed systems, a floor track), and stack neatly to one side when open. You will also hear them called operable walls, movable partitions, sliding partitions and folding partitions.
Terminology varies between manufacturers and specifiers, but the underlying idea is consistent — a flexible, reconfigurable division of space. The main variations are:
- Movable / operable walls — individual panels moved along a track and stacked away.
- Movable partitions — the same principle, described in partitioning terms.
- Sliding partitions — panels that slide rather than fold.
- Folding partitions — hinged panels that concertina together.
- Acoustic movable walls — systems engineered specifically for sound insulation between rooms.

Anatomy
How Does a Movable Wall Work?
Individual panels hang from carriers (trolleys) that run inside an overhead track fixed to the structure. Each panel is moved into position to close the opening, then top and bottom seals are extended to complete the acoustic line and jamb seals close the ends. When the wall is opened, the panels travel back along the track to a stacking area.
The key components of a movable wall system are:
Track
The overhead rail, fixed to the structure, that carries and guides the panels.
Carriers / trolleys
Wheeled hangers running in the track from which each panel is suspended.
Panels
The solid or glazed leaves that form the wall when closed.
Top & bottom seals
Retractable seals that press against soffit and floor to close acoustic gaps.
Jamb seals
Seals at the ends of the wall against the perimeter jambs.
Suspension
Single- or two-point hangers that transfer panel weight into the track.
Stacking area
The pocket, bay or end zone where panels park when open.
Closure panel
The final panel that completes and locks the closed wall.
Pass door
An optional door built into the wall for access without opening the whole run.

Why the seals matter as much as the panels
The acoustic performance of a movable wall lives or dies at the seals. A panel can be rated highly in the laboratory, but if the top, bottom and jamb seals are not correctly adjusted on site, sound simply leaks around them. This is a large part of why ModernGlide installs with trained operatives and why regular servicing protects the acoustic performance you paid for.

The main types are solid acoustic movable walls, folding partition walls, glazed folding walls, and individually operated glazed movable walls. Choose a solid acoustic wall when sound insulation and visual privacy are the priority, and a glazed system when natural light and visual connection matter. Solid systems reach the highest acoustic ratings; glazed systems trade some acoustic performance for light and openness. Many projects use both in different areas of the same building.

Are glass movable walls soundproof? No movable wall is fully soundproof, but glazed systems can provide genuine meeting-room privacy — the MG600 reaches Rw up to 50 dB. Where the acoustic target is very demanding, a solid system such as the MG100 will outperform any glazed option.
Structural Principle
Top-Hung vs Floor-Supported Movable Walls
Top-hung walls hang from an overhead track fixed to the structure above, keeping the floor completely clear with no floor track. Floor-supported walls carry their operating weight through the floor, with head restraint at the top. Top-hung suits most projects; floor-supported suits certain frameless glazed folding systems and situations where suitable overhead structure is limited.
Top-hung
- Load transferred into the supporting structure above.
- Usually needs a steel or concrete beam to carry track and panels.
- Track fixed to that structure at the required intervals.
- Single- or two-point suspension per panel.
- No floor track where possible — clean, level floor.
Floor-supported
- Operating weight transferred through the floor.
- Head restraint / guide required at the top.
- Useful where overhead structural loading is a constraint.
- Common for flush frameless glazed folding systems.
- Structural considerations still apply and should be confirmed.

With a top-hung wall, the beam or soffit above is doing the work. Deflection, fixing capacity and the positioning of services all affect the track. Movement & Stacking
Suspension Systems & Stacking Options
Panels are suspended by single-point or two-point carriers and routed along the track to a stacking area. Common stacking arrangements are centre stack, end stack, remote / parking-bay stack and recessed pocket stack, plus single-wing, bi-parting and folding configurations. The stacking layout must be designed into the floor plan from the outset.
Single-point suspension
One carrier per panel — simple, common on lighter panels.
Two-point suspension
Two carriers per panel for heavier panels and smoother tracking.
Centre stacking
Panels park centrally within the opening line.
End stacking
Panels stack at one or both ends — the most common arrangement.
Remote / parking-bay stacking
Panels routed to a separate bay to keep circulation clear.
Recessed pocket stacking
Panels disappear into a wall pocket for the cleanest finish.
Bi-parting
Panels split and stack both ends of a wide opening.

Why stacking should be considered early in the design
Stack space is not free — a run of panels needs somewhere to go. Deciding late that panels must stack in a pocket, or at both ends, can force changes to the room layout, doors and circulation. We ask about stacking at the first conversation because it shapes the whole design.
Acoustics
Movable Wall Acoustic Performance
A movable wall's acoustic performance is described by its Rw rating — a laboratory measure of airborne sound insulation. On site, the sound insulation actually achieved between rooms (DnT,w) is usually lower, because sound also travels around the wall through the ceiling, floor, services and adjacent construction. The whole build-up matters, not just the wall.
- What does dB mean?
- The decibel (dB) is the unit used to measure sound levels and sound insulation. In acoustic insulation, a higher dB figure means more sound is stopped.
- What is Rw?
- Rw (Weighted Sound Reduction Index) is a single-figure laboratory rating of a building element's airborne sound insulation under standard test conditions.
- What is DnT,w?
- DnT,w is the field-measured sound insulation between two finished rooms, accounting for the actual construction and flanking paths. It is what occupants really experience.
- Laboratory vs site
- Laboratory Rw tests the element in isolation. Real rooms have ceilings, floors, glazing and services that let sound bypass the wall, so site figures are typically lower.
Why Rw 50 dB does not automatically mean 50 dB between rooms
Sound finds the weakest path. Even a high-performing wall will underperform if noise flanks around it. The common flanking paths to control are:
- Ceilings — sound passing over the wall through a continuous suspended ceiling void.
- Floors — transmission through a continuous floor or raised access floor void.
- Doors — pass doors and adjacent doorsets that are lower-rated than the wall.
- Glazing — glazed elements alongside the wall.
- HVAC — shared ductwork and diffusers bridging the two rooms.
- Service penetrations — cable, pipe and containment routes through the line of the wall.
- Adjacent partitions — junctions with permanent walls that are not detailed for acoustics.

Rw 50 dB doesn't mean you'll get 50 dB on site — here's why
We see this regularly. A wall is specified at, say, Rw 50 dB, but the suspended ceiling runs continuously over the top, or the ductwork links both rooms. The wall does its job — the sound just goes around it. The overall room-to-room acoustic performance depends on the complete construction, so acoustic detailing of the ceiling, floor and services above and around the wall is as important as the wall rating itself.

To specify a movable wall, you need to define the opening size, the acoustic performance target, the structural support available, the finish, the stacking position and whether a pass door is required — along with the floor finish, ceiling construction, access, programme and any fire requirements. Structure
Structural Requirements for Movable Walls
Top-hung systems place the combined weight of the track and panels into the supporting structure above, so a suitable steel or concrete beam is usually required. Floor-supported systems transfer their operating weight through the floor while needing suitable head restraint at the top. Structural requirements should be confirmed by a structural engineer for the selected system and project, not assumed.
The critical points for design teams are the load path, permissible deflection of the supporting structure, and the fixing capacity where the track is attached. A track fixed to structure that deflects under load will not operate or seal reliably. Track & Fixing Methods
The overhead track can be fixed to a range of supporting structures — structural steelwork, a concrete soffit, timber support or proprietary support systems — with allowance made for suspended ceilings and head tolerances. The right fixing method depends on the structure present and the weight of the system.
- Steelwork — track fixed to a structural steel beam sized for the load.
- Concrete soffit — fixed to a suitable reinforced concrete beam or slab.
- Timber support — where an engineered timber support is provided and confirmed.
- Proprietary support / channel systems — where used to distribute the fixing.
- Suspended ceilings — the ceiling is coordinated around the track, not relied on for support.
- Head tolerances — allowance for structural movement and deflection above the track.

Access
Pass Doors in Movable Walls
A pass door is a hinged door built into the movable wall, allowing people to move between the divided rooms without opening the whole wall. Pass doors are available in solid and glazed forms, as single or double leaves, and can be designed with accessibility in mind — but they do have acoustic implications and should be specified deliberately.
- Inset pass doors — a door leaf within a panel.
- Full-height pass doors — where available for the system.
- Single or double — sized to the traffic and access requirement.

Troubleshooting
Common Movable Wall Problems
Most movable wall problems come down to worn or dry carriers and track, seals that no longer seat correctly, or panels that have drifted out of alignment. Many are straightforward to service. Below are the questions we are asked most, with the usual cause.
Why is my movable wall difficult to move?
Usually worn or contaminated carriers and track, or a track that has moved. Cleaning, lubrication and re-adjustment normally restore smooth operation; badly worn carriers are replaced.
Why won't my movable wall close fully?
Often panel misalignment, a dropped closure panel, or a jamb/seal issue preventing the last panel seating. Re-alignment and seal adjustment usually resolve it.
Why is sound travelling around my movable wall?
Typically the seals are not seating — bottom seals not extending, worn seals, or gaps at the head — or sound is flanking through the ceiling, floor or services rather than through the wall itself.
Why aren't the acoustic seals working?
Seals wear, harden or fall out of adjustment over time, and drop/bottom seal mechanisms can seize. Servicing renews or re-adjusts them so the acoustic line is restored.
Why are the panels out of alignment?
Carrier wear, track deflection or damage from heavy use. Re-alignment and, where needed, carrier replacement bring the panels back into line.
Can an old movable wall be repaired?
Very often, yes. Seals, carriers, finishes and hardware can usually be renewed. Our servicing team assesses the wall and recommends repair or upgrade.

“Movable wall” overlaps with several other terms. The differences matter when specifying: a folding partition folds rather than slides individually; a sliding door is a single leaf, not a full dividing wall; a stud partition is permanent; and a folding glass wall is a glazed variant. Here is how they compare.
Movable wall vs folding partition
A folding partition is one form of movable wall in which hinged panels concertina together. “Movable wall” is the broader term and also covers individually sliding, top-hung panels. Both divide and reopen a space; the difference is how the panels move and stack.
Movable wall vs sliding door
A sliding door is a single leaf that closes an opening for access. A movable wall is a full-height dividing wall of multiple panels engineered for acoustic separation between rooms — a different job entirely.
Movable wall vs stud partition
A stud partition is a permanent, fixed wall. A movable wall gives you the same division when you want it and an open space when you don’t. Stud walls can reach very high acoustic ratings but cannot be moved; movable walls trade a little acoustic performance for flexibility and reusable floor area.

What does Rw mean?
Rw (Weighted Sound Reduction Index) is a single-figure laboratory rating of a building element's airborne sound insulation, measured to standard test conditions. A higher Rw means better sound insulation.
What is the difference between Rw and DnT,w?
Rw is a laboratory rating of the element in isolation. DnT,w is a field measurement of the actual sound insulation achieved between two finished rooms on site, which takes flanking transmission and the whole construction into account. Field figures are typically lower than the laboratory Rw.
Do movable walls need floor tracks?
Most ModernGlide systems are top-hung and require no floor track, keeping the floor clear and level. Some glazed folding systems (such as the MG500) are floor-supported and use a floor channel. The right approach depends on the structure above and the aesthetic required.
Can a movable wall contain a door?
Yes. Integrated pass doors can be built into most systems, allowing access between spaces without opening the full wall. Pass doors are available in solid and glazed configurations, as single or double leaves.
Can movable walls be glazed?

Does a movable wall need structural steelwork?

Either top-hung — hung from an overhead track fixed to the structure above — or floor-supported, where the operating weight is carried through the floor with head restraint at the top. The choice affects structural design, floor finish and aesthetics.
Where do the panels stack when open?
In a pre-designed stacking area: a wall pocket, a dedicated parking bay, or the end(s) of the opening. Stack space must be planned into the floor layout at the design stage — insufficient stacking space is one of the most common specification oversights.
